Dairying occurs from the sub-tropical areas of
Queensland through to the more temperate southern
states and there are over 3 million dairy cattle
in Australia. The dominant breed is the purebred
Holstein Friesian which makes up nearly 80% of
the total registered herds, with Jersey cattle
representing 12% of the total, Holstein Friesian
x Jersey crossbreds 5% and other minor breeds
4%. Depending on the region, herds are either
fed in feedlot or pasture-fed environments, or
combinations of both with the dairying systems
and genetics representing some of the most productive
in the world.

The experience worldwide with Jersey Crossbreds is that they have proven to be more heat resistant and require less maintenance than purebred Holstein Friesians so may offer a competitive alternative. Jersey crossbreds have proven to be successful in tropical areas in Mexico and the Philippines They also have much higher production levels that the AFS (Australian Friesian Sahiwal).
