Where do you
source your animals from?
Cluny Exports Agribusiness Specialists have an Australia-wide network of buying agents so it is best to let us know your specifications and livestock objectives and we can make recommendations tailored to your specific needs and environment.
What is the lead time between ordering and delivery?
This depends on the quantity and the seasonal availability of the livestock in general terms. The delivery date will be stated in the Order Form, however, can vary slightly due to factors including re scheduling of flights, isolation depot space and time required for Government approval of the shipment. Your shipment will leave independently of our other shipments. We do not group you together with other clients, as this can lead to long delays of even months, whilst you wait for other clients to get organised. Our service is individual and tailored to your needs, specifications and desired delivery date.
What is the best way to transport
the livestock?
Generally speaking, this is decided by financial factors because air transport is always more expensive than sea, however, livestock behavioural factors are also a key consideration. For example, goats and sheep have a reputation for being tough animals but actually get easily stressed if shipped by sea on long journeys. Accordingly, it may make economic sense to consider shipping goats and sheep by air to lessen the risk factors. Cluny's involvement in air transport of live animals has never seen a single mortality occur in thousands of animals. Shipping by air usually means that animals arrive within 7 to 20 hours, we can incorporate built in watering systems to avoid dehydration and veterinary treatment to alleviate stress. The stress of long sea journeys can effect an animal’s health long term health, air is always the safest way to go.
What advice can you give us regarding
livestock performance management?
For example, when considering exporting Dairy Cattle to tropical climates it is important to plan for, and implement the infrastructure that will maintain optimum operating temperatures, and also to develop the best available feeding rations based on locally available feed. Maintaining temperatures in tropical climates can be overcome by locating dairies at altitude or a simple effective system of fans and misters. Cluny Exports Agribusiness Specialists Staff has expertise in tropical dairying systems and can provide assistance with the establishment and ongoing operation of your tropical dairy. With all livestock it is critical that the infrastructure of the destination farm be prepared well in advance and that there is available feed for animals arriving.
How do we know where the livestock
are from?
All cattle will have either an electronic ear tag (in Australia, this is called the National Livestock Identification System or NLIS) or visual ear tag which means that each animal can be traced back to the farm of origin. All livestock shipped will be provided with computer identification records. The visual ear tag is a backup in case the NLIS tag is dislodged in transit.
All animals will be provided with a list detailing weights and ear tag numbers. We also endeavour to link the climate we source livestock from to the destination climate to reduce acclimatisation risks.
How do we know whether we will receive quality livestock?
Cluny Exports Agribusiness Specialists rigidly focuses on quality in sourcing livestock for their clients. In order to prepare our initial quote, we will require specifications from you regarding the breed, age, weight, and general quality requirements that you have.
Some health protocols provide for inspectors from the importing country to examine the livestock prior to the shipment being exported. Our clients are always welcome to inspect the stock once they have entered the isolation depot just prior to export.
The Australian Government Livestock Export Standards, and Cluny Exports, also require that only healthy animals will be loaded for shipment.
Why shouldn’t we simply accept the cheapest priced livestock for export?
You get what you pay for in all things. Quality livestock is underpinned by quality genetics developed over many years or even decades. The result is fast maturing meat producing livestock or high milk production capabilities with dairy cattle are the result of this genetic development. The difference in buying the cheapest export stock compared to going for a quality product is profit realised quicker, compared to slower profits or none at all.
What are the commercial terms?
The following terms apply for all our business:
An Indicative Quote in AUD per head will be provided once the client has provided clear specifications on the type of livestock required and will be valid for 7 days before a purchase contract will be signed. |

We can also provide an unloading and travel plan for the final destination airport and post arrival procedures to ensure everything goes smoothly. Staff can also be provided to supervise unloading at the destination and to assist with settling in procedures.
Can anyone export livestock from Australia?
Only companies licensed by AQIS can conduct livestock export shipments and exporters must rigidly follow procedures with regard to everything that occurs during the export process.
