Goat meat is the most consumed meat in the world across many cultures and is believed to be 850 to 1000% lower in saturated fat than beef, lamb (excepting Dorper, Damara and Van Rooy breeds) or pork, making it also one of the healthiest meats. For more technical data on the nutritional merits of goat meat, carcass dressing percentages, daily weight gains and general information etc. see our PowerPoint download in the Resources section (also covers Dorper sheep).
Australia is the world’s largest exporter of live goats and include Full Blood Boer, Savanna (White Boer) or Crossbred Boers (Boer buck mated over Feral Does) The Boer goat is a much larger and more efficient meat producer than smaller feral (wild) goats and has high carcass yields of between 48% to 55%. The Boer goat was imported to Australia from South Africa and has been crossbred with the local feral animals (also known as Rangeland) for many years. Boer Full Bloods and Boer crossbreds are able to achieve exceptionally high weight gains of between 250 to 400 grams per day if fed high-quality farm feeds compared to 90 grams per day for ferals. Crossbred Boer goats reach their target weights in half the time of feral goats. A newer breed to Australia is the Savanna (white boers from South Africa) that have been bred for superior mothering ability and confirmation (particularly teets). They may yet prove to be the best type of Boer to enter Australia. The extremely high demand for goats means that they are subject to availability and seasonal factors.
